BTS member SUGA (Min Yoongi) has taken a remarkable step beyond the music industry. His recent philanthropic journey has shined a light on autism awareness and long-term support through a groundbreaking collaboration with Professor Cheon Geun-Ah, a leading child psychiatrist at Severance Hospital in Seoul.
A Vision Beyond Donation
In late 2023, SUGA began engaging in deep discussions with Professor Cheon about the needs of children on the autism spectrum. These conversations revealed that sustainable, long-term treatment is essential — yet current systems often rely on short-term interventions. Understanding this, SUGA pledged an astonishing ₩5 billion (approx. $3.6 million) to establish a specialized autism care center at Severance Children’s Hospital. This donation marks the largest artist-led contribution in the hospital’s history.
The Birth of the MIND Program
SUGA didn’t stop at financial support. Together with Professor Cheon, he co-developed the MIND program — a social development therapy model that uses music as a core medium. The acronym MIND stands for:
- Music: Sensory and emotional engagement through sound
- Interaction: Building social bridges via shared musical activities
- Network: Learning teamwork and connection in group sessions
- Diversity: Encouraging acceptance through individual expression
Between March and June 2024, SUGA personally joined weekend sessions. He played guitar, guided children in rhythm exercises, and encouraged them to explore emotions through melodies. The results were powerful — children who had been withdrawn began playing instruments, interacting with peers, and expressing themselves with newfound confidence.
Real Change, Real Stories
A 10-year-old boy who previously avoided social interaction started participating in ensemble activities. Another teen, initially non-verbal, began showing emotional reactions and engaging with praise — all sparked by music. The impact was undeniable. Through rhythm and harmony, children began breaking through communication barriers.
The Min Yoongi Treatment Center: Opening September 2025
The upcoming Min Yoongi Treatment Center will be a hub for inclusive therapy, offering enhanced MIND sessions alongside ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), speech therapy, and developmental programs. It will also serve as a research base for publishing therapeutic studies and training new professionals.
Words of Gratitude and Hope
Professor Cheon expressed her admiration for SUGA’s heartfelt involvement: “Beyond his donation, his sincere presence, effort, and empathy have inspired us all. His actions reflect a true commitment to reshaping autism support in our society.”
SUGA shared, “This experience has shown me the healing power of music. It’s a language that can help children express their emotions and connect with the world. I’m deeply thankful to be part of this journey, and I’ll continue to stand with these kids so they can grow confidently as members of our community.”
BTS Impact Continues Beyond the Stage
As fans worldwide look forward to the return of BTS OT7, SUGA’s contribution reminds us of the group’s deeper message: compassion, connection, and creating real change. His dedication offstage proves that the true influence of BTS goes far beyond music charts and stadiums — it's about healing hearts and building a better future.
This moment is not just a news item — it's a beautiful chapter in BTS history, one that ARMY around the globe will treasure and remember.
